After minding their own business all winter, a family of weta were inadvertently disturbed when we opened the outdoor umbrella for the first time since last summer. The weta family have now been transferred to a more permanent home in amongst wood and undergrowth.
“Weta are incredible looking creatures. They range in size, but with their big bodies, spiny legs, and curved tusks, they are one of New Zealand’s most recognisable creepy-crawlies.” http://www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/native-animals/invertebrates/weta/

Hi there
Thank you for liking my blog. I am not a great fan of wetas at the best of times (I once had one inside my bed, goodness knows how it got there, but it was pretty unpleasant waking up being bitten by a weta – and in suburbia!), but to get a whole family in a disused umbrella was impressive. They are pretty amazing creatures. The family are now living ‘happily’ in the wood pile.
