The Hobbits are near…

Today is the premier of Peter Jackson’s first installment of ‘The Hobbit: an unexpected journey’ in downtown Wellington. I took a brief look (as time allows when you have small people) at the set up and the red carpet this morning before the madness this afternoon. Some pretty keen diehard fans had been camped out overnight to get the best viewing spot of the stars.

Wellington did it: new world record holders for the most sandcastles in an hour!

…. although still to be confirmed by the good folks at Guinness World Records.

Last Sunday, 25 November 2012, armed with my 50mm lens, I took my family along to Lyall Bay Beach, Wellington, to see Adventure Wellington (www.adventurewellington.co.nz), with support from the important people and associates from Weta Workshop, set out to break the Guinness World Record for the most sandcastles built in one hour. Over 3000 people came together on sunny Lyall Bay Beach to break the record and it looks like they did it with 1523 sandcastles passing the required grade. Yay Wellington. A very enjoyable event for my family, friends and I – thank you.

Importantly, the Neonatal Trust (www.neonataltrust.org.nz) got to raise funds from this event to support the neonatal units around New Zealand. A fantastic cause!

A week out and preparations are well underway for ‘The Hobbit: an unexpected journey’ movie’s red carpet affair in Wellington.

A member of an imaginary race similar to humans of small size and with hairy feet, in stories by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Lit up seaweed

I was pleasantly surprised at how this photo turned out of the sunlight playing on the incoming tide and this piece of seaweed during a seaside visit with my boys to Whitirea Park last week. I thought I would enhance the image, but still prefer the original.

Words today are like the shells and rope of seaweed which a child brings home glistening from the beach and which in an hour have lost their luster.

The Eclipse

This morning a friend and I watched (through a special $3.50 solar eye piece) the eclipse of the sun from Plimmerton. I decided to see whether my camera could capture the unfolding changes in the light. My camera was definitely not fussed on taking the images pointing into the sun (and the more difficult with me trying not to look directly at the sun), so I tried taking reflections of the eclipse in my friend’s pool (which is needing its seasonal clean). I like the contrasting colours of green and blue.

The Weta

After minding their own business all winter, a family of weta were inadvertently disturbed when we opened the outdoor umbrella for the first time since last summer. The weta family have now been transferred to a more permanent home in amongst wood and undergrowth.

“Weta are incredible looking creatures. They range in size, but with their big bodies, spiny legs, and curved tusks, they are one of New Zealand’s most recognisable creepy-crawlies.” http://www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/native-animals/invertebrates/weta/
