Wellington did it: new world record holders for the most sandcastles in an hour!

…. although still to be confirmed by the good folks at Guinness World Records.

Last Sunday, 25 November 2012, armed with my 50mm lens, I took my family along to Lyall Bay Beach, Wellington, to see Adventure Wellington (www.adventurewellington.co.nz), with support from the important people and associates from Weta Workshop, set out to break the Guinness World Record for the most sandcastles built in one hour. Over 3000 people came together on sunny Lyall Bay Beach to break the record and it looks like they did it with 1523 sandcastles passing the required grade. Yay Wellington. A very enjoyable event for my family, friends and I – thank you.

Importantly, the Neonatal Trust (www.neonataltrust.org.nz) got to raise funds from this event to support the neonatal units around New Zealand. A fantastic cause!

Do you remember your pre-school birthday parties? The excitement of your cake, your friends, opening your presents, laughter, music, games. I remember bits and pieces only – seemingly elaborate cakes from fairy stories, balloons, and games. I wish I could remember more!

I think, at a child’s birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift should be curiosity.

The Chinese Lantern Festival takes place on the 15th day of the first lunar month of the Chinese New Year. Chinese lanterns may be any colour, but red is traditionally used alongside other colours. Red represents happiness and good luck, and represents the element of fire.
